How FCT residents spend weekends
When Inside FCT sampled the opinions of some residents, they said the weekend starts from Friday given that they have half working hours in their various offices, as activities are low key.
For Olive Daniel, a resident in Kubwa and also a student, she wishes every day was weekend, as it affords her more time to rest at home and visit recreational centres for a lot of enjoyable social activities.
She said week days are good for hustling and bustling to make ends meet, but weekends are preferred more because it is best for good socialisation.
According to her, just like any part of the world was some people are too eager to start the weekend, as they welcome every Friday with jubilation.
For many residents, weekends are always associated with different social engagements like weddings, nite clubs, games in relaxation centres, and other outdoor activities with friends.
Some civil servants begin their weekends as early as Friday afternoon, when offices are slightly closed especially when Muslim faithful visit Jumat mosques for prayers, affording some people time to travel Another resident, James Oche, said his weekends starts on Friday after work, and when he gets back home he takes his shower, sleep then wait for the night hours before going to club after the working stress during the weekdays.
One Chioma Ezenwa says her weekends start from Saturday as she usually goes to the market to shop for food stuff to cook for the weekend.
“I visit different stores in Abuja, such as Shoprite, Sahaad stores because that’s the only time I have time.
The week days are always too busy for me in the office”. On her part, Grace Eze, who resides at Gwarimpa, said that weekends are always an opportunity for people to have their various tribal meetings.
“For me, on Saturdays I attend choir rehearsals as I wait for Sunday for church services”. Another resident, Tony Duke, said he goes to Night club to cool down and then swim to feel much relaxed.
“I am a very busy person that’s my opportunity to enjoy all my pleasures. On Sundays, I meet with friends to discuss on interesting things that are affecting us like politics, including watch football and games,” He said. Similarly, one Dr. Ahmed Usman, said he was not on call (duty), he goes to the gym on Saturdays to work and rest too.”
On Sundays, I usually visit my loved ones and hang out with family and friends,” He said. For Audu Jubril Sulaiman, among the week days, Friday is the best, because as a Muslim, he always looks forward for special Friday worship, and thereafter head home to enjoy the remaining weekend days with his family.
“After Friday prayer at the Jumat Mosque, I usually travel back home to meet my family at Kuje, to spend the rest to weekend together.
Inside FCT observed in Abuja that after the physical exercise, residents usually go back to their various homes to relax then go for shopping or visit recreational parks with their families.
In the Abuja metropolis, weekends are always filled with creative activities, residents are seen in groups, dressed in colourful attires at different parks or drinking joints, either dancing to good music, holding meetings, smiling or discussing issues that concerned them or staging competitions of various kinds .
