My regret as INEC chairman – Jega

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Monday reviewed his tenure as the boss of the electoral body and concluded that his only regret was his inability to create a separate salary structure for INEC workers.

Jega spoke in Abuja during a retreat organised for the electoral officers of the commission where the report of the 2015 elections was reviewed.

The retreat was titled, “2015 general elections: Lessons and the way forward.”

Jega also said that members of staff of the commission were subjected to difficult circumstances during the 2015 elections.

The son of ex-Governor Theodore Orji, Mr. Chinedum Orji, representing Umuahia Central State constituency (Peoples Democratic Party), has emerged the Majority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly.

Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Azubuike, disclosed on Monday when he led the lawmakers to the Government House for  a courtesy call on Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

The Speaker, while introducing his colleagues to the Governor, identified Hon. Abraham Oba, representing  Aba Central constituency (All Progressive Grand Alliance), as the Minority Leader.

He introduced Tony Mezie Nwubani (PDP), Ukwa West Constituency, as the Majority Whip; while the Minority Whip, according to him, is Chibuzor Okogbue ( APGA), Bende South constituency.

Mr. Cosmos Ndukwe (PDP) representing Bende North had been elected the Deputy Speaker during the inauguration of the House last Thursday. The House comprises 13 PDP members and 11 APGA members.

Police raid baby factory, rescue nine pregnant girls

Nine pregnant girls and women were on Saturday discovered in a baby factory at the 9th Mile area of Enugu State during a raid by the police.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed that the baby factory was owned and operated by one Ikechukwu Onoh, of Etiti, Amakwo-Ngwo village, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Onoh and the ladies were taken into police custody after the raid.

According to Amaraizu, the factory was run in the Onoh’s private residence.

The operatives of the 9th Mile Division of the command raided the baby factory after monitoring activities in the building over a period of time.

NLC begs Dangote, Otedola to donate food to Osun workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress has appealed to wealthy Nigerians like Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola and others to come to the aid of the Osun State workers by donating food items to them because of the hardship they are going through.

The chairman of the NLC in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, made the appeal in an interview in Osogbo on Friday.

Adekomi, who lauded the Christian Association of Nigeria for seeking food aid for the workers, added that it would be hypocritical to claim that they did not need help from outside at this time.

Tears as Buhari, wife meet Chibok girls’ mothers

Tears flowed freely on Friday as President Muhammadu Buhari; his wife, Aisha; and the wife of the Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo, met with two women whose daughters are among the over 200 missing Chibok girls.

The emotional-laden encounter took place inside the Defence House, Abuja, where Buhari currently operates from.

Mrs. Osinbajo had earlier led the two women to a meeting with Hajia Buhari.

The President’s wife later led them into another round of meeting with Buhari.

APC makes a U-turn, accepts Saraki as Senate President

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Friday said the party has accepted Senator Bukola Saraki as the President of the Senate.

He said the reality was that Saraki’s colleagues had duly elected him and the party was ready to live with the reality.
Odigie-Oyegun spoke with State House correspondents shortly after joining members of the transition committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to present their report to the President at the Defence House, Abuja.
Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, both of the APC, emerged as leaders of the National Assembly on Tuesday against the directives of the party which had earlier asked its members to vote for Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila.

Boko Haram kills 37 women in Borno villages

Terror group, Boko Haram, has killed 37 people in separate attacks on six villages in Borno State, a youth vigilance member told journalists in Maiduguri on Thursday.
He revealed that the notorious group drove in a convoy of vehicles to Koshifa, Matangle, Buraltuma, Darmanti, Almeri and Burmari villages, all in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, on Wednesday night.

Rivers killer gin: Death toll hits 66

  I'm a bit confused, even after the ban of this ogogoro, people are still selling? I think they should just arrested the people that sell it, or put a bounty on there head. Instructing people to call the police if they see anyone selling this ogogoro.

Rivers State Government revealed that 28 more deaths had been recorded, following the continued consumption of the killer local gin by unsuspecting consumers, thus increasing the figure from 38 to 66.

The Director of Public Health in the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Nnana Onyekwere, disclosed this in Port Harcourt shortly after dealers in local gin, popularly known as Ogogoro or Kai–kai, met with the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Somieari Harry, on the burning issue in the state.

Tinubu’s wife snubs Saraki, Lawan takes oath of office

 

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday administered oath of office and allegiance on Ahmad Lawan and 27 other All Progressives Congress senators who were absent at the formal inauguration of the Eighth Senate.

The  senators were gathered at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari, who was billed to address them when the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa, proclaimed the Eighth Senate and subsequently conducted the election.
The election, which had 23 APC senators in attendance, produced Saraki as president of the Senate, while Senator Ike Ekweremadu was elected his deputy.

Ronaldo’s mother caught with €45,000 at airport

Dolores Aveiro, the mother of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, was stopped at Madrid’s Barajas Airport last month and caught carrying an illegally large amount of cash as she prepared to fly out of the country, the newspaper El Mundo reported.

According to The Telegraph, 60-year-old Aveiro, who spends long periods of time with her multimillionaire footballer son in his luxury mansion outside Madrid, was held by border police at Barajas after it was found that she had €55,000 (£40,000) in her hand luggage. Rules against money laundering state that the maximum travellers are permitted to take out of Spain without declaring the transfer is €10,000.

Dogara beats Gbajabiamila, emerges Reps speaker

A member of the House of Representatives from Bauchi State, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, has been elected the Speaker of the House.

In an election to pick the Speaker of the 8th legislature in Abuja on Tuesday, Dogara, a legal practitioner, scored 182 votes to beat the member, representing Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, who scored 174 votes.

In a primary conducted by the ruling All Progressives Congress last Saturday, Gbajabiamila had beaten Dogara to emerge the consensus candidate of the APC for the Reps top post.

Wike dissolves electoral, judicial commissions

RIVERS State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has dissolved ‎the State Independent Electoral Commission and the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission.
The dissolution of the two bodies by the governor came few hours after the State House of Assembly earlier directed the governor to dissolve the two commissions.
The House had summoned the chairmen and members of the commissions to give account of their activities within the last two years.
The state lawmaker, who were apparently dissatisfied over the explanation of the head of the two commissions on Monday, empowered Wike to sack the commissioners and dissolve the commissions.
Wike, in a short  statement, signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, explained that he  acted ‎in line with the directive of the House on grounds of official misconduct leveled against the commissions.‎

And it has now been revealed that the publicist who helped shut that article down more than a decade ago was behind Jenner's groundbreaking 20/20 interview special with Diane Sawyer in April.

Jenner first reached out to Alan Nierob, an executive at Hollywood agency Rogers & Cowan, when a New York Times reporter began asking her questions about cross-dressing, Variety first reported.

Rivers confirms 38 dead, bans consumption of ogogoro

The Rivers State Ministry of Health, RMH, has confirmed 38 people dead across the state as a result of the consumption of the illicit gin also called ogogoro.
The health ministry said ten out of eleven persons that took the gin in Obio-Akpor area died, in Bonny area, seventeen out of eighteen died while in Gokhana Local Government Area, eleven out of thirteen persons died.
Speaking, yesterday, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Somieari Isaac Harry dismissed rumours that the victim died as a result of dog meat.

Health chiefs have issued a cancer warning over eating chips and other fried food amid revelations they contain a harmful chemical that is also found in tobacco smoke.

The European Food Safety Authority yesterday published a study confirming that acrylamide (AA) – which forms when foods are cooked at a high temperature – is a cancer risk.

It warned: ‘AA forms in numerous baked or fried carbohydrate-rich foods, including French fries, potato crisps, breads, biscuits and coffee. AA is also known to be present in cigarette smoke.’

Sir Ian McKellen wishes he had come out earlier because it made him a better actor.

The 76-year-old star said that he had been using acting as a 'disguise' to hide his sexuality and that he was ashamed of who he was.

But when acting became about 'telling the truth', the X-Men actor decided he had to come out in 1988 at the age of 49.

He said: 'I regret and always shall that I didn't see the significance of coming out at a much earlier date because I think I would have been a different person and a happier one.'

Sir Ian, 76, went public amid the controversy over the Section 28 legislation which prevented local authorities from promoting homosexuality.
