They were set to walk down the aisle later this year.
But according to a Wednesday report from UsWeekly, Charlize Theron, 39, and Sean Penn, 54, have split after a year-and-a-half together.
The
Oscar winning actress was the one who called off the engagement after
they spent time together in Europe in May, a source said.
Charlize
attended the Cannes Film Festival in mid May to promote her film Mad
Max: Fury Road. She looked happy with the Bad Boys star on May 14 at the
premiere of her blockbuster.
The
couple were pictured side-by-side two days later in Vienna at the Life
Ball. At one point he had his arm around her during the event.
The exact date of their split is not known.
The A
Million Ways To Die In The West actress was not seen with Penn when she
presented an award to Seth MacFarlane at the Critic's Choice Awards on
May 31.
The
mother to Jackson, aged three, was also solo when arriving at LAX
airport on June 7. The star is now in London where she will film The
Huntsman.
On
May 28 Sean was spotted heading into a U2 concert at The Roxy in LA
without Theron. He was reportedly seen alone in Brentwood on Tuesday.
According to People,
the two were not living under the same roof earlier this month.
Charlize was staying at her Hollywood home with son Jackson before she
took off for London while Sean has been spending time at his Malibu
residence. The beach home was for sale, but he took it off the market
recently.
A source also told the site the two had 'backed out of at least one scheduled event together.'
They have known each other for decades, but only went public with their romance in December 2013.
A
year into their relationship, Us reported they had gotten secretly
engaged during a trip to Paris. An engagement ring was never seen,
however, and the two never confirmed the reports.
The two
worked together earlier this year on the drama The Last Face, which was
shot in Africa. Sean directed while Charlize starred. Also in the cast
is Javier Bardem.
Sean
was married to Madonna, 56, from 1985 to 1989. In 2010 he divorced
Robin Wright, 49, after 14 years of marriage. She is now engaged to Ben
Foster.
Meanwhile, the blonde's exes include Craig Bierko and Stuart Townsend.
In
March the Dead Man Walking star told Esquire UK, 'You say I've been
married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I
was less informed than I am today,' he said.
'So
I wouldn't even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first
marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the
tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, "Without tradition, new things
die." And I don’t want new things to die.'
He also said he was 'surprised to be in love' with the Monster star.
'I’m
self-proclaimed bad at mathematics but I can do two plus two,' he
explained. '53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you
haven’t been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late.
'But to run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer and – God! – a much happier feeling.
'It’s a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you’re a good person within it.'
