Ebola: Remain vigilant, experts warn Nigerians

Public health physicians have called for more vigilance at the border posts in order to prevent a recurrence of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease in the country.

The appeal is coming on the heels of the reported return of the disease in two West African countries of Liberia and Sierra Leone, last week.

According to a member of the Ebola Prevention Committee in Nigeria, Dr. Oladoyin Odubanjo, the Federal Government needs to strengthen the precautionary and screening methods in order to forestall a return of the disease.

CBN extends BVN registration deadline to October 31

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday extended the deadline for the Bank Verification Number registration by four months  from June 30 to October 31, 2015.

The apex bank disclosed this in a circular issued to all Deposit Money Banks operating in the country.

The circular dated Tuesday, June 30 with reference number BPS/DIR/GEN/CIR/02/008 was signed by the Director, Banking and Payment Systems Department, CBN, Mr Dipo Fatokun.

The bank in the circular said the extension became imperative in order to give customers of DMBs more time to participate in the enrollment exercise.

Governor Wike impounds another Amaechi’s aide’s vehicle

The Rivers State Government, Nyesom Wike has again impounded an armoured Range Rover belonging to the immediate past Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha.

The bullet-proof vehicle was removed from Okocha’s residence at Rumuigbo in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area at about 9am by security operatives attached to Government House.

 It was on saturday at the Ade Maternity Home, Sagamu, Ogun State.  Grieving students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University forcefully removed the corpses of their colleagues who were killed in a car crash the previous day from the hospital’s morgue.

Suicide Bomber kills 25 and injures 25 in attack on Shiite mosque in Kuwait City

 

At least 25 worshippers have been killed today after an Islamic State suicide bomber struck at a packed Kuwaiti mosque after Friday prayers.

Shocking photos show dozens of dead and wounded Muslims who were all observing the holy month of Ramadan in the Al-Imam al-Sadeq Shiite mosque in Kuwait City.

Witnesses said worshippers were standing shoulder-to-shoulder in group prayer when the bomb ripped through the building.

The ISIS-affiliated group in Saudi Arabia, calling itself Najd Province, said its militant Abu Suleiman al-Muwahhid carried out the suicide bombing.

He was seen walking in to the back of the mosque during prayers, before standing among his victims and blowing himself up.  

Oil spillage ruffles Edo community

Residents of Umoghun-Nokhua community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State have lamented the degradation of their environment by oil spillage.

The residents said the spillage, which started in March 2014, had led to loss of lives caused by hunger and infectious diseases.

The aggrieved villagers also noted that the community had lost about 2,000 hectares of farmland to the spillage.

Refuse heaps trigger fear in Umuahia

Residents of Umuahia, the Abia State capital, have said they face health risk if the growing dumps of refuse in various parts of the city are not immediately evacuated.

Southern City News observed that most refuse buckets positioned at strategic locations in the cities had been burnt by residents in their attempt to decongest the overflowing wastes.

The sanitary situation in the state, it was gathered, worsened following the failure of the Waste Management Agency to pay workers’ salaries for months.

Onitsha mob sets robbery suspects ablaze

TWO suspected armed robbers were on Monday burnt to death in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The incident occurred along the Old Road, Nkpor, near an old generation bank.

The suspects, who were said to have operated on a motorbike, had snatched a bag containing cash from a lady who just withdrew the money from a nearby bank.

Eyewitnesses told Southern City News that the robbers snatched the money at gunpoint, but people around, who noticed what was happening gave them a chase, caught them, beat them with clubs, stoned them before setting them ablaze.

Hamilton, an MLB Network analyst, was found next to the front door and with several bullet wounds. Jordan apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in another part of the property. 

President Buhari orders removal of military checkpoints nationwide

President Buhari has ordered for the immediate removal of Military Check points nationwide,The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismaila, disclosed this to State House correspondents shortly after a meeting the President (Buhari) had with service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday.
 “President Buhari had instructed the Chief of Defence Staff to get the Chief of Army Staff and Inspector-General of Police to  remove all the military men along the roads across the country,” he said. 
The meeting had further encouraged the security chiefs to do more in the war against insurgency because of the leadership being provided by the President who is a retired military officer.

Britain's fattest man, who weighed 65 stone, has tragically died at his home in Kent.

Carl Thompson, 33, had been confined to his home for a year, relying on NHS carers to wash and feed him.

This morning, a private ambulance, police and the fire brigade were seen outside his home in Dover.

Police today confirmed his death in a statement. 

'Kent Police was called at 10:38am on 21 June, to a property, Dover following reports that a man in his 30s had died,' a spokesman said.

At least three dead and 34 injured after man drives car at speeds of up to 90mph straight through crowds of shoppers in Austria before getting out and stabbing bystanders

 

At least three people are dead and another 34 injured after an SUV ploughed into a crowd of people in Graz, Austria.

Eyewitnesses say the driver rammed into crowds at up to 90mph before he got out and began randomly stabbing bystanders, which included the elderly and policemen.

A seven-year-old boy and a woman are thought to be among those killed in the onslaught on the main shopping street of Herrengasse.

China bans Ramadan fasting in mainly Muslim region

China has banned civil servants, students and teachers in its mainly Muslim Xinjiang region from fasting during Ramadan and ordered restaurants to stay open.
Most Muslims are required to fast from dawn to dusk during the holy month, which began on Thursday, but China’s ruling Communist party is officially atheist and for years has restricted the practice in Xinjiang, home to the mostly Muslim Uighur minority.
“Food service workplaces will operate normal hours during Ramadan,” said a notice posted last week on the website of the state Food and Drug Administration in Xinjiang’s Jinghe county.

Police have released CCTV images of a white gunman who shot dead nine people in a cold-blooded race-hate crime at an African-American church in South Carolina on Wednesday night.

The suspect opened fire at a weekly bible study group at the 150-year-old Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, shooting dead three male victims and six females - but spared one woman so she could tell the world what happened, eye witnesses recounted. 

A five-year-old girl also survived the attack after her grandmother told her to play dead when the shooter started firing.

Up to 20 soldiers injured after three troop carriers crash during training exercise on Salisbury Plain

As many as 20 military personnel have been wounded in a crash involving three troop carriers on Salisbury Plain, police said.

Two sustained 'life threatening injuries' in the collision near Westdown Camp and were taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment, according to the South Western Ambulance Service.

Eight with serious injuries were taken by road to Salisbury District Hospital, while 'a number' of 'walking wounded' were treated at the scene.

The incident took place during a joint training exercise between the British and Indian military, it has been reported. Many of those involved in the crash are believed to be from the Indian forces.

Rise in kidnap cases worries Abia lawmakers

PDP disowns group calling for Buhari’s resignation

The Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday distanced itself from a group, PDP Media Watchdog, over the latter’s call on President Buhari to resign.
PDP said the group was not working within and in the interest of the opposition party.
The group had in an earlier statement signed by its head, Mr. Tunde Lawal, called for Buhari’s resignation over comments attributed to the President that there was a limit he could do because of his age.
But according to a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh, said,

Old age will limit my performance –Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has admitted that his age would limit his performance as the President of the country.

Buhari, who was   a military governor at 33 and Head of State   at the age of 40, said he would have loved being a President when he was at a younger age . He will be 73 on December 17, 2015.

The President spoke with Nigerians resident in South Africa on Monday after taking part in the 25th assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union   in Johannesburg.

He said, “I wish I became Head of State when I was a governor, just a few years as a young man. Now at 72, there is a limit to what I can do.”

Despite his advancement in age however, Buhari gave assurance that his administration would make a difference.

Buhari explained that   what brought him to his current position was his love for the country.

He recalled that he was in the war front for 30 months during the civil war, adding that like any other Nigerian, he lost relatives and loyal people to the war.

The residents said the military personnel were deployed in the area eight months ago to flush out vandals and stop the vandalism of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s pipeline.

They said the operatives stormed the area on October 5, 2014, impounding thousands of litres of petrol stored in jerrycans while a large number of suspects were arrested.

The residents added that after the initial success, the operatives took over about 20 houses on the street and closed some shops under the pretext of securing the area.
