The monkeypox victim, who committed suicide at an isolation centre of the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, Bayelsa State, has been identified.

His name was Perekebina Biu, a father of three and hailed from Patani community in Delta State but resided in Agbere town in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa state.
Apparently, the late 30 year old, reportedly took his own life by hanging himself with a rope in the hospital and not after drinking a certain substance as earlier claimed in some reports.
It was also learnt that until his death, Pere was the Treasurer of the Agbere Youths Association and was already recovering from the monkeypox disease he reportedly contracted in Yenagoa before his demise.
The suicide victim, had no prior record of mental illness.
When contacted on the allegation raised by the community source concerning how Pere got a rope with which he killed himself, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, said the question was curious.

He said anybody who wished to commit suicide did not need to consult any person before carrying out such action.
