On Monday,The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Mr. Is-had Modibbo, in Abuja said that the commission had revoked the licences of 54 broadcast stations that he said refused to pay the mandatory fees within the 60-day window permitted under the law.
He said similar treatment would be meted out to other station operators who refused to pay their licence fees to the commission.
Modibbo, who spoke at a press conference, said the NBC had also given all stations who owed the commission over N5bn till the end of March 2017 to pay up their licence fees or have their stations’ licences revoked.
He said the commission would bring up stiffer conditions for the issuance of radio and television licences to prospective owners.
The DG specifically warned that cases where people use political connections to get illegal and undue favours that run contrary to the NBC Act and the Nigeria Broadcasting Code would no longer be condoned.
He said the June 2017 deadline remained sacrosanct on Digital Switch Over.
