Turkish police on Monday said they had seized an ivory dagger, speckled with precious stones, which belonged to the late Libyan ruler, Muammar Gaddafi.
Police said in Istanbul that the dagger worth about 10 million dollars was looted during the chaos that erupted in Libya in 2011, leading to Gaddafi’s overthrow.
However, the dagger was seized during a raid in Istanbul.
The man in possession of the dagger bought it for 4.6 million dollars and planned to sell it to a businessman from Saudi Arabia at 10 million dollars.
Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in 2011 after a Nato-backed uprising. The Islamic State group and other extremists have gained ground in the power vacuum following Gaddafi’s ousting. The three men were released pending trial on possible charges of smuggling and breaching the rules relating to the trade in endangered species.
Libya has immense oil reserves said to be the largest in Africa, though the country is struggling to keep its industry afloat amid security chaos since the overthrow of Gaddafi.
